Tumblr Post #10

While we are all essentially compiling our ideas together and we haven’t done work outside of the group yet, I have been the one compiling the video with my computer. This involved just clipping the videos where we decided to and putting it in order with transitions between scenes. I’ll also then add captions to the video, just of the year or name of the scene.

I’d say that the workload is equal. It’s only natural that one person can work on the video specifically on one computer, but everyone else has been making up for it by talking about the project proposal, thinking of more ideas, or helping with the video (places on where to clip video, etc).

Final Project Quick-Write

Group: Ewan, Eric, Jennifer, and Annabel

1. How technology has changed the entertainment industry: focus on performance changes (lighting, back-up vocals, etc)?

2. Most likely a video.

3. We still need to see how certain big entertainment areas have grown (so like YouTube). We could do surveys about the entertainment industry like asking how many people watch only Netflix, how many people only go to the movies, etc.

4. We still have to see about that, but maybe camera phone to take video and edit with iMovie or Windows Movie Maker.

5. To show how drastically technology has affected entertainment and how we do things different like watching movies differently, change to digital music instead of CDs, etc.

6. We could do any of these, depending on how we want to split up the assignment and when we want to/can work on the project together. We will most likely start work sometime next week and utilize not having class, probably starting with group meetings.

Lit. Review Paper Cover Letter

Dear Jasmine,

I feel that the main concept of my paper is about the necessity of digital literacy being integrated into the classroom.

I feel like the point that I’ve made most clear is that not only students, but teachers need to know a lot about digital literacy, especially if we want it properly integrated into classrooms. I think that the area that is most unclear is the planning of how to actually integrate digital literacy into the school system.

The organization in my paper seems to be good and flows well, so I feel that there is no problem there with the reader to follow my points. I have the connection of sources done at the end, after I introduce all my sources and before the conclusion. I feel that I have not entirely done all that I can do to cover all of the connections between my sources, though, as it was only done in two large paragraphs. If you have any comments regarding this, I’d like to know so that I can expand the connections or maybe organize them better if that is a problem as well.

If I were to start work on another revision today, I would, again, focus in on the idea of connecting the sources and expand it further.

The number one question that I want answered regarding my paper is how can I make the connections between articles and videos stronger, if they aren’t already strong enough?

Thank You

Ewan

Quick Write

  • So far in my paper, I’ve done my introduction to the paper with a thesis and done another paragraph explaining how I collected my sources. I also looked for sources in what we’ve been shown in class and on my own through the library or from online videos.
  • The main struggle that I have has to do with the structure of the paper because I’m not really sure how to introduce the sources that I found into the paper + do everything that should be done (summarize, my view, and connect to other sources). The main problem is probably I’m not sure when to connect to the other sources.
  • For the paper, tonight I will work on summarizing my sources in the paper and writing up about them, which will probably write up for half of the paper. Then on Thursday, I’ll finish up with the connections of the sources + the conclusion.

  • The great project of our generation seems to be the ability to communicate and link other people across the world to make a different and better future with institutions and other projects.
  • I feel that Brown’s ideas about a global ethic are plausible, but not on a huge scale because it really is possible in this era with technology to spread certain images and stories to get enough people to want to do something. Obviously there are/will be people who don’t get too into the activism and don’t do much, but our communication possibilities allow us to possibly influence some people across the globe.
  • As stated before, certain images and stories can influence the world if certain shocking things become viral.
  • Relating to nationalism, it is difficult to fuel a global society without neglecting national affairs in some sense. There are a lot of problems to tackle and people to help so some people will naturally want to help national affairs before trying to take on global issues. And similarly, there will be people who feel like global issues should be taken care of above other issues.
  • I thought the part with Amy Winehouse and Nelson Mandela was interesting and funny.

The word meme comes from the word Dawkins uses to describe an idea that flows between people. The article also talks about ideas and the flow of information being the building blocks of human life and genetics. Meme’s flow and change in much the same way as genetic information in the…

Larry Lessig Quick Write

  • We are in a read-only culture and the consumers consume but few/none create.
  • The concept of taking other content and remixing it is not piracy.
  • Remixing is used to retell something in a different way.
  • Interesting relation to people who remix in the present to the trespassing of planes over farm lands from 1945.
  • Some remixing is being taken down because it contains third-party content and it isn’t looked at when being taken down.
  • We all live life against the law and my generation knows that it lives against the law as “pirates.”

In summary, Blair’s article is an explanation of how our ancestors were swamped with information and they did not know how to deal with having so much knowledge. She also talked about the ways that people tried to compile all the information in methods similar to how we keep our information organized today. Blair ended the article with comparisons to how we organize all the sources that we have available and how frustrating Internet searches are similar to how difficult it would be to find what you want back in the day.

Regarding an “information overload,” Blair suggests that the overload is such a bad thing because we are overloaded on information that is not sufficient or useful to us. Blair says that “too much of the bad stuff, not enough of the good, has been the subtext of complaints about overload from the beginning” (Blair). She also talks about the idea that we are being overloaded not solely because of all the new information that we have but because of our “enthusiasm in acquiring and sharing knowledge and information” (Blair).

When Blair explained how our ancestors had to compile ways to organize an overload of information, I thought that it was very interesting. We are not used to thinking about keeping check of information without Internet and we think that it is inefficient to try to keep huge sums of data organized without using the Internet. However, even with difficulty, our ancestors were able to do it and thought that it was interesting. I also enjoyed what Blair said about enthusiasm, as I stated in what she thought about “information overload.” It is very true that our desire to collect all this information drives us to organizing it. If it weren’t true then no one would want to compile all the data and knowledge into one area. It is interesting to want to have everything all in one database where we can all look it up, even if some searches turn up inefficient. The article made me appreciate all that has been done so that we, in the present and even the future, have the ability to try to look up what we want, whether it be for a project or just to look something up.

“Semi-Literate Youth” Answers - Lunsford

  1. Lunsford is claiming that digital advances are not making people more illiterate. She is also saying that the problem of students not properly tackling challenges lies with teachers. Another claim that she makes is that students do not use “text message literature” in their formal writings.
  2. Lunsford’s research and studies suggest that students are not making more mistakes in their writing (they may be making different errors, but not more) and that learning takes place outside of the classroom in things like a blog post or photos
  3. Lunsford says that in a digital age literacy is not getting worse. We may be making different problems than we used to make, but we are getting better in other forms of writing, such as spelling.
  4. In relation to audience and contexts, Lunsford says that people in a digital age do know when to make formal papers formal in comparison to a conversation on Facebook. The example she gave of the text message and report of a student who went to Bangladesh showed that the two were saying the same thing, but in different words and format. This is related to the looking glass self because it is changing how you act around a professor than you do another colleague.
